"For over a century, the coastal Lisbon suburb Cascais was the Newport of Portugal: an ultra exclusive playground for the rich and aristocratic. Spain's royal family cemented that reputation when they chose this coast as a home-in-exile during Franco's rule. To this day there is an annual King Juan Carlos Cup, a sailing competition named for the reigning Spanish monarch.
Cascais (pronounced kash-KAISH), however, is starting to open up to the masses. For several years now, young tattooed and lip-pierced Lisboetas have discovered the crooked streets and jagged coast of this 19th-century town. They arrive on the train from Lisbon (a 30-to-45-minute ride) to stretch out on the town's pocket-sized beaches by day and drink in its old-fashioned pubs at night.
“It is meant to be one of the most important collections in contemporary art at the beginning of the 21st century,” said Filipa Sanchez, the executive director. “That's what we're aiming for. And we have already gathered more than 400 works in various different media. It's the reason we are here: to put Cascais on the map of the art world.”
Other galleries and museums are on the way, including the House of Stories and Drawings, devoted to the works of the Portuguese artist Paula Rego, known for her story-based paintings. The museum, expected to break ground this spring, will be in the center of town, next door to the tiny Museu do Mar, or Museum of the Sea (Rua Júlio Pereira de Mello, 351-214-825-400; www.cm-cascais.pt).
Design hotels, not surprisingly, have arrived. The Farol Design Hotel (Avenue Rei Humberto II de Itália, 7; 351-21-482-34-90; www.farol.com.pt) opened in 2003 with 34 rooms, cut into the craggy rocks that overlook the dramatic coastline near an area known as the Boca de Inferno. Each of the hotel's “designer rooms” are individually decorated by a Portuguese fashion designer; all offer such amenities as hydro-massage tubs. Doubles are 130 to 300 euros, or $170 and $390, at $1.32 to the euro."
